The inspiration for this idea came from the New York MTA system, but could easily be implemented by any complex public transportation system.

This idea is primarily aimed at tourists and people not familiar with the system.

A map of the subway lines is shown on a large touch screen. The touch screen is interfaced with a ticket machine. A subway rider is prompted to touch the station they are going to (start point is given by location of screen).

Now, the route is highlighted and directions, including transfers, is displayed. Furthermore, the ticket with the correct fare (one way or return) has the directions printed right on it!

Additional feature: Prompt for a cell phone number and rider can receive directions by SMS text message.

This system could also be available on official transit website.
